Yes that’s right. Another non DC book is my read of the week. What is this world coming to?
Not to say there wasn’t a lot of good books out last week, because there was. This title just jumped out at me. Maybe because I am such a frelling yotz.
This a new ongoing (!) series following everyone’s favorite bondage gear clad Scarran half breed. Fallen from his positon, left to fend for himself in the uncharted territories, Scorpius finds himself in the right place, at the right time.
Let’s be honest, after John, Scorpy is clearly the most interesting character in the ‘Scapeverse, His absence from the main Farscape ongoing series has been obvious, and the most unsatisfying part of that book (which I do enjoy anyway) This Zero issue does exactly what a zero issue should. It sets all the pieces we need to know on the board. I liked the inclusion of the flashbacks with Tauza, his Scarran mentor/torturer (first seen in the season 3 story, Incubator). It seems that this series will explore Scorpy’s past as well as his future. Could a visit with Natira be in our future?
With O’Bannon overseeing the story, as with all the Farscape books, this story can pretty much be taken as the gospel cannon. David Alan Mack is certainly no slouch either, when it comes to working in both the Sci Fi and licensed property world, having written many Star Trek novels. This is the first I have ever seen of Mike Ruiz’s work, he does great job with the wild alien worlds and Scorpy’s dark twisted memories.
I can’t even begin to imagine where this story could be going. I am hoping to go at least 6 issues before we cross over with the parent title. Let’s see how Scorpy can survive the universe of Independent Comics as well as he can the Uncharted Territories.
Grade A
