The BBC officially announced a (partial) cast list for this fall’s Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special, and to no one’s real surprise, David Tennant has been confirmed as appearing. How ever, there was a second somewhat unexpected name announced. No, not him. Billie Piper will be along with Tennant when the two Doctors meet up this November.
It had long been rumored the special this year would also feature multiple Doctors, but up until today no actor who previous played the role has been able to confirm they would be taking part in the special. In fact, many of them had been publicly saying that hadn’t been approached about the possibility of taking part. Christopher Eccelston, who brought the Doctor back to our screens when the show returned in 2005 had until late, very publicly stated he was not interested in ever returning to the role. But recently, he seemed more open to the idea.
I believe that, with filming on the special beginning next week, that it was going to leak out that Tennant and Piper were on set. as fans flock to location shoots. So not to have the casting spoiled by the internet, the BBC and Moffat decide to public with this return, in a way to perhaps distract folks from the fact that Eccelston (and maybe even McGann?!) were back in the studio secretly filming some scenes! While having two Doctors together would be cool – having 4 (or more even) would be amazing. Back during the show’s original run, all the Doctors showed up in both the 10th and 20th anniversary specials. (The Three Doctors and The Five Doctors, respectively). Granted they had to us footage from the unaired Shada to get Tom Baker into The Five Doctors… but he was there.
Here is the official press release from the BBC
