Staff Picks – Comics for May 14, 2014

STaff picks

It’s Wednesday, you’re headed in to your local comic shop, and you don’t know what you are going to get yet?

Here’s what the crew at Geeksville think you should be dropping your ducats on this week.

You’re welcome.

BAtetena6Batman Eternal #6 – DC Comics

Writers: Tim Seeley, John Layman, Ray Fawkes, James T Tynion IV, Scott Snyder
Art: Trevor McCarthy

What DC says:

Something hellish is brewing in the tunnels under Arkham Asylum, and Batman’s going to need the help of The Demon to stop it!

What we say:
You know…  I was really on the fence about getting on board with a weekly series, but man I will admit when I am wrong, Snyder, Tynion & co. are blowing us away with this story too big for any one Batman book.  This is truly cinematic in scope.

Starwars17Star Wars #17 – Dark Horse Comics

Writers: Brian Wood
Art: Stephane Crety & Julien Hugonnard-Bert

What Dark Horse says:
As Princess Leia and her prince prepare for their wedding day on Arrochar, the uneasy feeling among the Rebels-especially Han Solo-grows. Meanwhile, Luke, on an alpine mission with local troops, discovers the Alliance’s new ‘friends’ aren’t so friendly!

What we say:
For over 20 years, Dark Horse has had the Star Wars License, in in that time they have told some of the best “Extended Universe” stories. Brian Wood has continued that excellence with his back to basics approach to the original cast story. Going back to the end of the original movie, he has created a fresh take. It’s like being a kid in the 70’s again.

CapMarvel3Captain Marvel #3 – Marvel

Writers: Kelly Sue DeConnick
Art:  David Lopez

What Marvel says:

  • Captain Marvel & The Guardians of the Galaxy!
  • Carol takes her mysterious alien passenger home… and lands in the middle of an uprising against the Galactic Alliance!
  • Does our good soldier obey orders – or defy the Avengers and side with David against Goliath? Two guesses. First one doesn’t count.

What we say:
A great place to get started if you aren’t familiar with Marvel’s more cosmic side.  Especially if you want to get ready for the Guardians of the Galaxy movie this summer.

Q&W10Quantum & Woody – Valiant Comics

Writers:  James Asmus
Art:  Kan0

What Valiant says:
Quantum and Woody – against the world, or against each other?! Woody always had a weakness for the ladies, and when an old flame lures the goofus into a gang of mad-science super-crooks, Woody flips back to his old lawless ways! Where does this leave Woody’s sweet clone girlfriend? And now it’s up to his own brother Eric, who isn’t that sure he even wants to be a superhero, to bring Woody in! Don’t miss this bro-down for the ages!

What we say:
I don’t know how many times I have to say it.  If you are not reading Valiant, you must just not like great comics.

Shutterimage1Shutter – Image

Writers: Joe Keatinge
Art: Leile Del Duca

What Boom says:
“INDIANA JONES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY!
Marvel Knights: Hulk and GLORY writer JOE KEATINGE teams up with artist extraordinaire LEILA DEL DUCA for her Image Comics debut in an all-new ongoing series combining the urban fantasy of Fables and the globe-spanning adventure of Y: The Last Man. Kate Kristopher, once the most famous explorer of an Earth far more fantastic than the one we know, is forced to return to the adventurous life she left behind when a family secret threatens to destroy everything she spent her life protecting.”

What we say:
I am a sucker a good adventure romp.  This could be our new great love.

JLU1Justice League United #1 – DC Comics

Writers: Jeff Lemire
Art: Mike McKone

What DC says:
In Canada, the team of Animal Man, Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter and Stargirl is joined by Adam Strange to fight an unstoppable forced called the Unimaginable.

What we say:
Somewhere between Canada and Deep Space, there is a team of superheroes who have no business being on a team together.  Yet somehow, they work together.  Animal Man and Adam Strange, on the same team? Yeah, we’re gonna like this.
