Donald Glover is Miles Morales in Disney’s Ultimate Spider-Man

Back when Sony was discussing rebooting the Spider-Man franchise, there were a lot of ideas, and rumors about how to make a new Spidey movie so soon after the end of the Sam Raimi trilogy.  One interesting idea was to have him played by comedian, writer, and star of Community, Donald Glover.

Well here let him tell you the story;

Of course, as you know none of that happened. Andrew Garfield played Peter Parker, and Glover went on to launch his rap career as Childish Gambino.

But now USA Today reports that Disney’s Ultimate Spider-Man animated series (which centers around the Peter Parker Ultimate version) will feature a Spider-Verse story arc (with the series gaining the subtitle Web Warriors), and Miles Morales will be part of it. Guess who going to voice him? (Psst, it’s in the title at the top of this article).  The article features a clip of the scene.  In addition to Morales, expect appearance by many other Spider heroes, including Iron Spider, Spider-Man 2099, the Amazing Spider-Girl.

The very existence of the Miles Morales character owes a lot to the internet and Donald Glover, and the show Community. In the quirky comedy’s second season opener, we get a glimpse of Glover’s character, Troy Barnes, getting ready for school in the morning, wearing Spider-Man pajamas. (The sight gag itself inspired by the casting rumors, and internet response). The imagery however was not wasted on Marvel writer Brian Michael Bendis. In an 2011 interview with USA Today Bendis said of Glover, “I saw him in the costume and thought, ‘I would like to read that book.’ Shortly afterward, Marvel decided on the Death of a Spider-Man story in 2011, in the Ultimate Universe. Peter Parker would die, and Miles Morales became Spider-Man.

Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors premieres this Sunday at 9 a.m. ET/PT on Disney XD.
