Secret Wars: The End the Marvel Universe

All good things… right?

Comic book fandom received the news today that the Marvel Universe, which was introduced in 1961, would be coming to an end and along with Marvel’s Ultimate Universe.  Both Universe will reach their demise this spring in the upcoming Marvel event Secret Wars. On hand to make the announcement from Midtown Comics’ downtown location were Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso, with Senior Vice President of Publishing and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort.  The upcoming eight-issue limited series Secret Wars will begin this coming May.

This is something we have been heading towards literally since the start of  Marvel Now” Brevoort told those on hand (and watching live via Marvel’s youtube channel.)   This is something that Secret Wars and Avengers scribe Jonathan Hickman has been working towards since he took over the Avengers books, if not earlier than that.

Universes are colliding, and annihilating one another, by the end of Secret Wars #1, there will be no longer be any Marvel Universe,  all there will be is Battleworld.  “Battleworld is the detritus that is leftover after the destruction of the Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe. It is the little melting pot that the new Marvel Universe will be created, will be fermented.” Brevoort explained.  Battleworld will not just be made up of the two primary universes, but it will be made up of little slices of various alternative Marvel universes, included Days of Future Past, Age of Apocalypse, House of M, and Planet Hulk. among others.

However massive you think this is, let me assure you it is bigger than that,” Brevoort said. “It’s by far the craziest thing I’ve dealt with.

It’s the most coordinated thing we’ve ever done” added Alonso.

When all is said in done, the Marvel Universe will be completely new, made up of from the remains of all that came before.  Alonso compared the creation of the new universe (not the NEW universe) to two pizzas colliding.   “Toppings fall off, new toppings are found”.   This is bad news for people who liked the pizza they had been eating since 1961.

Fans will still have a few slices of that old Pizza, but once Secret Wars begins, that’s all there will be.   Until the end of the event, Battleworld will be the Marvel Universe.  What it looks like after that will be anybody’s guess.  Will there be one streamlined universe, with no alternative timelines?  Or will it be a new Multiverse? Given what Marvel has going on, there are few ideas we’ve come up with.  We expect the new Marvel universe to have a lot more in common with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  It also wouldn’t surprise us if, at least at first, there wasn’t a Fantastic Four for a little while.  The biggest unknown who will be webslinging around New York when the Secret War is over.
