DC Launching A Ton of New Titles With A “Broader Focus”

DC Universe will introduce 24 new tiles this summer, the most in a co-ordinated launch since the entire DCU relaunched as the New 52.   It’s being called “bold new direction for the DC Universe (DCU).”    Most of the new titles will be ongoing series, featuring some of DC’s most popular characters to have never had their own ongoing series before (Cyborg, Starfire, Midnighter)  and some haven’t had their own title since the 2011 relaunch (Black Canary, Martian Manhunter, Doctor Fate)

Only 25 of DC’s current titles will continue after the upcoming Convergence Event.   That means there will only be 49 comics offered by DC, instead of the 52 they have done.    But the press release notes that “additional new titles debuting throughout the year.”    After almost 4 years, DC will drop the New 52 imprint on their titles.  But this is not a reboot, nor a return to the pre Flashpoint universe.

This heralds in a new era for the DC Universe which will allow us to publish something for everyone, be more expansive and modern in our approach and tell stories that better reflect the society around us,” said DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Dan DiDio.  “Whether you’ve been a DC fan your whole life, or whether you are new to comics – there will be a book for you beginning in June.”

Not only will DC’s comic offerings be more diverse, they are bringing new creators to help reinvent characters, such as Black Canary, Bizarro, Cyborg and Starfire.  The DCU will have  a “new contemporary tonality to ensure a diverse offering of titles.  Top writers and artists, as well as emerging fresh voices, are on board to help create an expansive lineup of comics that appeals to a broad audience of fans.”

Beyond character and creators, the June slate will showcase different styles and approaches to storytelling as we add offbeat, irreverently funny titles such as BIZARRO, BAT-MITE and PREZ,” said DC President Jim Lee.  “Truly there will be something for everybody as we simultaneously celebrate our rich legacy while embracing new voices and concepts.”

FCBD_DIVERGENCE_CV_580_54d445ebdb0875.62352178Fans won’t have to wait until June to get their first look at the new DC direction.   DC COMICS: DIVERGENCE will be available at comics shops as part of Free Comic Book Day, Saturday, May 2.  There will be three 8-page previews for the June releases.  Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s BATMAN, as well as Geoff Johns and Jason Fabok’s launch of the Darkseid War within JUSTICE LEAGUE featuring the biggest villains in the DCU – Darkseid and the Anti-Monitor, and Gene Luen Yang’s DC Comics début with celebrated artist John Romita, Jr on SUPERMAN.
