Actors in Sci-fi and fantasy programming can sometimes feel trapped by their past roles. The thousands of fans who loved their show and characters can sometimes have trouble letting go of the past. It can be a problem for the actors, too, making them typecasted, not letting them go on to new roles and challenges. Firefly star Alan Tudyk, along with Nathan Fillion, along with the help of 46,000 fans have created the webseries, Con Man, the story of one such actor, Wray Nerely. Wray was one of the stars of Spectrum, a short-lived sci-fi show, where he played the pilot of a spaceship. The ship’s captain was played by Jack Moore (Fillion). Now, ten years later, Moore is a major Hollywood star. Nerely, not so much.
The webseries was crowdfunded by one of the most successful Indiegogo campaigns ever. Fan response to campaign overwhelmed the series creators as they raised over 3 million dollars (More than 700x than they were asking!). It was so successful that the 3 episode web series they had planned expanded to 12!
Here is the series trailer.
Con Man centers on the post-show life of Wray Nerely (Alan Tudyk) the co-star of “Spectrum,” a sci-fi series, which was canceled before its time and went on to become a cult classic beloved by fans. Wray’s good friend, Jack Moore (Nathan Fillion) starred as the series Captain and has gone on to become a major celebrity, while Wray hasn’t found his desired level of stardom. Wray is the begrudging guest of sci-fi conventions, comic book store appearances, and different pop culture events; however, everything is not as it seems from the outside. The series will explore these events and all the weird and crazy things that happen to them along the way.
Con Man also features a plethora of Sci-Fi’s biggest personalities including: Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica), Amy Acker (Person of Interest), Gina Torres (Firefly, Suits), Sean Maher (Firelfly, Eastsiders), Felicia Day (Buffy The Vampire Slayer), Seth Green (Family Guy/Austin Powers), Mindy Sterling (Austin Powers), Jewel Staite, (Firefly), Summer Glau (Firefly, Terminator: SCC), Sean Astin (Lord of The Rings), James Gunn and Joss Whedon.
The series will be available on Vimeo this September.
