This year Marvel passed on a presentation in the big room, so it’s WB/DC Entertainment’s turn in Hall H to wow the folks at San Diego Comic Con, and they didn’t hold anything back.
The room was filled with anxious fans, whose appetite was whetted with looks at a couple of non-DC related projects first, The Man from U.N.C.L.E (starring Superman, himself, Henry Cavill as Napoleon Solo and Armie Hammer as Illya Kuryakin). The presentation kicked off with a taped introduction by the always colorful and highly redacted director Guy Ritchie. Then they showed the official Comic Con trailer, which they kindly put right on the official Warner Brothers Youtube channel.
It is kind of cool that spy movies can have that touch of camp again, after the seriousness and dour characterization from the more recent Bond films, and the Bourne series. This reminds me some of The Kingsmen, (which we just happened to watch this week). Lots of action, intrigue, romance and just a touch of camp, which is fine by me. I never saw the television show this film is based on, but I think I will head to the theaters to see this in August.
This was followed up with a look at Pan, from director Joe Wright. On hand were Wright, along with Levi Miller(Peter Pan), Garrett Hedlund(Hook), and Hugh Jackman(Blackbeard). Pan is a retelling of the original Peter Pan story by JM Barre, “a reframing of the story as we know it,” says director Joe Wright.
Then it was time for the main event, the DC Comic movies for 2016, starting with the first official looks at the Suicide Squad. “There’s a massive DC universe just ready to explode.” said Zack Snyder, during the video. Not only did we see the first Suicide Squad and Justice League glimpses. The presentation included all the characters they’re developing, including Cyborg, and the Green Lantern Corps!
Next up an extended look at the Suicide Squad, which will hopefully be officially released online soon, because it stole the show. Amanda Waller (Viola Davies) is seen talking with some military types, about the team she has put together. A task force that can be used, and if things go poorly, they can be denied, because they are made of up bad guys. Cut to Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) being held in a cage, à la Hannibal Lecter, being recruited by Waller. Followed by a montage with Deadshot (Will Smith), The Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez) and the rest of the squad before Batman (Affleck) and the Joker (Jared Leto) show up at the end stealing the show, much to the crowd’s delight.
Finally, the main event, the new trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
