Matt Ryan will get another crack to play John Constantine, the Hellblazer, joining the CW’s DC Universe this fall on an episode of Arrow. It was announced today at the Television Critics Association. “It’s a great one-shot episode,” said network President Mark Pedowitz at the CW’s presentation.
Constantine ran for 13 episodes on NBC last season, but it was not picked up for a second season by the network, and was then shopped around, but it never found a home. Stephen Amell offered to make an appearance on the cancelled series if it got a second season, but now it looks like it worked out the other way around.
I do wonder if this is the same Constantine who appeared on the eponymous NBC series, or Matt Ryan will now play the Arrow-verse version of the same character. By that I mean, does this now set the Constantine series in the same world as Arrow and Flash? Could a character like a Jim Corrigan or Dr. Fate (whose helm appeared on the shelf in Constantine’s magical safe house, along with Eclipso’s diamond) also turn up in Arrow’s fourth season.
Arrow producer Marc Guggenheim said they Constantine has been considered for a guest appearance in season three, in the role of a mystical expert, advising Oliver Queen about the Lazarus Pit, and Ra’s Al Ghul, but it never were able to make it happen. Magic and mystic themes will be explored during the upcoming season 4 on Arrow, and the appearance of the Constantine may lead to few other surprises this year.
Arrow returns Wednesdays this fall on the CW starting October 7 at 8 p.m.
