Monday Morning Geek Box Office Report – Turtles Raise Shell; Guardians Hang Tough

  Those heroes on a half shell,  the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ruled the box office this weekend taking in an estimated $65.0 million.  The franchise reboot caused many fans some amount of consternation when it was announced.  Early reports had director Michael Bay changing significant portions of the Turtles origin, include rumors that the turtles would be aliens, not mutants, and some disapproval of the casting of Megan Fox as intrepid reporter April O’Neil.     The Ninja Turtles opened strong for an August release, and slightly ahead of predictions.  A sequel announcement took place almost immediately.  I am … Continue reading

Monday Morning Box Office Report – Oh Yeah! Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Blows Away All Competition

  Guardians of the Galaxy, from Marvel exceeded all expectations this weekend and set a record for an August opening with an estimated $94 million, well ahead of the pre-release expectations of $65-80 million.  It crushed all other movies, including Lucy ($18 million) featuring Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman, as well as Get On Up ($14 million), the (Very entertaining) James Brown bio pic.  In fact, the combined box office grosses for the next 9 biggest movies this past weekend are less than what the Sci-fi/Superhero movie took in.   The opening set a record for August, easily besting The Bourne Ultimatum, … Continue reading

Hooked on a Feeling – The Music of Guardians of the Galaxy

  When the first trailer for this summer’s blockbuster, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy first hit the internet, we knew it was different from the other Marvel films.  Sure, it was set in space, and didn’t have familiar superheroes (if you weren’t a hardcore comic book fan).  It had a very cool Raiders of the Lost Ark-esque opening. SDCC14 – Recapping the Marvel Movie News

Ant-Man Marvel released the first concept art for the movie. Several cast members for the film version of the latest Avenger were introduced at SDCC, joining Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang and Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym.   Corey Stoll  and Evangeline Lilly will join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Stoll will play Darren Cross/Yellowjacket, (One of the other identities used by Hank Pym as a member of the Avengers in the comics.)
